Dental Implants
A dental implant is used to replace a single tooth, several teeth, or to support a full set of dentures.
Implants are cylinders that are surgically placed in the upper or lower jaw where they function as a sturdy anchor for replacement teeth. They are made of titanium and other materials that are compatible with the human body. Implants are often the alternative to bridges when restoring lost teeth.
In most cases, anyone healthy enough to undergo a routine dental extraction or oral surgery can be considered for a dental implant. Patients should have healthy gums, enough bone to hold the implant, and must be committed to good oral hygiene and regular dental visits. Some patients must be evaluated on an individual basis. Heavy smokers, those with uncontrolled chronic disorders (e.g. diabetes or heart disease) or patients who have had radiation to the head or neck area should be evaluated.
While you will be referred to an oral surgeon for the placement of the implant itself, Dr. Suthar specializes in and takes care of dental implant restorations in-house. The oral surgeon will place a healing cap over the implant while the area heals, usually for a period of several months. When it is determined that the implant has integrated into the jawbone, Dr. Suthar will take over and will fabricate an extension, or post, that will attach to the implant. A custom restoration, either a crown, bridge, or denture, depending on your situation, will be attached to the implant post(s). The restoration is designed to provide optimum form and function for many years to come.
